Background:
Interest in Universal Healthcare Coverage has significantly increased at the international organization and country level due to its inclusion in the SDGs. UHC is a huge agent of change as it increases covered populations and can expand services and benefits to existing patients. Partnerships, SDG 17, are key to achieving all of the SDGs, but particularly those in health- where the gaps between needed health infrastructure and present state is vast.
Public-private partnerships (PPP’s) are innovative solutions and integrate new care methods into the existing health systems. PPPs allow for sustainable developments and enabling of varied financing options for Ministries of Health. Today, private companies are developing capacity to finance, execute and facilitate PPPs. Some governments, however, slower to provide resources to Ministers that could enable these partnerships.
PPPs, by definition, are a give and take between expertise, experience and risk taking between the private and public sectors. Those partnerships will be few, and some unsuccessful, without a high degree of preparedness with host governments. For successful PPPs, governments need to accelerate their capacity in doing PPP’s and open up existing infrastructure and create new resources for ministries to use for partnerships.
Panel:
USAHA will moderate a discussion to outline the most successful partnership models for UHC. The roundtable will be very practical, speaking to concrete experiences of both the public and private sectors. We will explore the specifics to ensure long-lasting positive effects of PPPs as they relate to health.
Context:
The panel will be an intimate gathering of selected private and public sector leaders. It will be run according to Chatham House Rules. There will be no formal reporting of outcomes. However, we feel all parties will greatly benefit from a frank and practical exchange of views.
